North Sonoma Mountain Regional Park

This is one of Sonoma’s newest parks and is a great place for hiking, mountain biking, running, and sight-seeing.
The main trail in this park is called North Sonoma Mountain Ridge Trail. This trail is 4 miles long and leads all the way to Jack London State Park in Glen Ellen. There you can extend your hike and trek around Jack London State Park, or head back to the Sonoma Mountain trailhead for a nice 8 mile hike.
The North Sonoma Mountain Ridge Trail climbs to nearly 2,000 feet and offers sweeping views of Taylor Mountain and Bennett Valley. You can see Saint Helena, Hood Mountain, and Sugarloaf Ridge from the top.

The trail starts in the redwoods and is moderately easy atthe beginning.

After crossing over a bridge, you begin to climb out of the redwood grove.

Youthen cross open fields and wind up the mountain’s north slope.

Most of the trail is forested, but many spots open up to views of the valley below.

There is a generally steady climb on much of the trail, offering a great workout for hikers, bikers, and even runners. If you go all the way to Jack London State Park and back, you will have logged a good 8 miles. We hiked it at a decentpace in about 3hours with a nice stop for lunch. This trail is rated moderate to strenuous.
There is a spot at the 2.8 mile mark that you can go to the top for some stunning views of Bennett Valley. It is a very short detour and worth it.

There is another trail called the Umbrella Trail which offers a shorter distance (2 miles round trip) and also climbs to a vista point. This trail was closed during the months of October and November for restoration.
There are facilities at the trailhead and a map of the park for your reference.

This is a great park to hike if you are looking for some peace and quiet. Not many people know about it so there are not many people there (during the week, at least).
