There’s something comforting about making your own play-dough with your kids. This is a wonderful parent-child activity, where the child gets to see how a recipe comes together into something they can play with afterwards! Play dough is also a very effective sensory activity. There is something really cool about playing with warm, freshly made homemade dough.

Once you have made the play dough, there are many things you can add to it. We use food coloring, peppermint extract, and glitter. You can also add Kool Aid for a scent/flavor addition.

Homemade Playdough:

1 cup flour
1/4 cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup water
Food coloring, extracts, glitter, Kool Aid

Mix flour, salt, cream of tartarin a clean saucepan. Add oil and water*. Turn heat to medium. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes while stirring continuously. When mixture is forming into a ball, remove from heat. Knead until smooth and pliable.

* At this point you can add food coloring, extract, or Kool Aid if you want all one color/flavor. Or you can make the dough plain, cut into portions, and experiment with adding different colors/flavors to each portion for a variety. Glitter should be added at the end. When adding color/flavor to prepared dough, keep kneading in your hand until blended.
